Washington, D.C. is a city that is known around the world for a lot of different things. Obviously, it's known as the national capital of the United States. While these are all noble things to be known for, there is an entirely different side of Washington, D.C. that most people around the world are not familiar. That is the side where people live and work. These are the people that comprise this city, and this is the part of Washington, D.C. that I have been learning about recently. I travel there for work regularly, so I've been extending my stays for an extra day each time to explore. I have been choosing one neighborhood per trip, and on my last trip I chose to explore the NoMa neighborhood. I had heard about it from some locals and wanted to see it for myself. I wasn't concerned about lodging, either, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd be able to find and book a NoMa Washington, D.C. hotel room in seconds when I was ready for one.
The Development
The neighborhood got its name because it stretches north from Massachusetts Avenue. For generations, it was basically a hub for transportation as Union Station is here. However, in recent years there has been a lot of development taking place, and you can see how it's adding to the look of the area. New homes are being built or rebuilt and commercial buildings are being redone so that they can be both modernized and maintain their classic look. It's always exciting to see a neighborhood revitalized, and it looks like they're doing things the right way here in NoMa.
The Market
There are certain landmarks that are not just tourist landmarks that people come to visit and see and then leave. There are some that are institutions in the areas in which they exist. One of those landmarks is the Union Market. It is both a grocery store and a massive food market, so people can come and stock up on necessities and have a nice meal while they do so. It's enormous, and it's a lot of fun to walk around and see all of the different specialty food items that are available to consumers. I sampled a few pieces of poke, or raw seasoned fish, and it was delicious.
The University
NoMa is also home to an historic school. Gallaudet University calls NoMa home, and while many people may not have heard of it, it's a special place indeed. This is a school that's dedicated to the education of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and it's been here for over 150 years. The campus is quite large and it's also quite beautiful. I walked around for a while and marveled at all of the young minds developing right in front of me.
