Washington, D.C. is offers people a lot more than a plethora of historic sites, the center of the United States government and the symbol of democracy that it is for people across the country and the world. All of these things are worth seeing when you're there, but there is an entire city that surrounds the center of the district that I have always wanted to explore. Recently, I had to fly to Washington, D.C. for work, and my obligations ended on Friday morning. Instead of flying home immediately, I booked my return flight for 24 hours later. I wanted to explore just one neighborhood so that I could take my time and learn more about it without feeling time pressure. I chose to explore the Brookland neighborhood, as I had heard a bit about it from people who used to live in the area. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, either, as I had the HotelTonight app on my phone. The Churches
The first thing that strikes you when you walk into Brookland is the churches. I didn't know this, but the neighborhood is known as "Little Rome" to the locals. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful steeples and architecture that makes you feel as though you are in fact in the middle of some sort of European city. Some of the biggest and most glamorous churches in the country and even across the world are located here, and I went on a couple of different tours, fascinated by how anyone was able to build these structures so many years ago.
The University
The Catholic University of America has been located in Brookland since the late 19th Century, and this is a campus that appears to go hand-in-hand with the churches that sit near it. The campus itself is enormous, and it's as if you're in a forest reserve when you're there because it's almost entirely covered or surrounded by trees. I walked through a bunch of different open spaces, admired some of the buildings and even picked up a few mementos at the bookstore to commemorate my time in this beautiful place. I could see why the students I talked to while I was there were so happy.
The Arts
I never knew Washington, D.C. to be such an artistic city. I guess that's because when you think of government, you think of grinding work and offices. However, Brookland is very much a haven for artists. There are galleries that feature painters, sculptors, potters and the like, and you can even see these works on an art walk that is there. I did so and had a hard time not buying things that would have been difficult to get home.
