HotelTonight – Navy Yard Hotels at the Ready
It was always easy for me to gobble up the little bit of free time I had when I was in Washington, D.C. for work. There is so much history there and so much happening on any given day that, before I knew it, I had to go to my next meeting somewhere nearby. I love that about this beautiful place, and I always appreciated the opportunity to spend time there. If I ever felt like I was in the middle of it all, so to speak, it was when I was in Washington, D.C. The only problem I encountered was a bit of a lingering feeling of regret that I never got to see what life was like for the people who live in that part of the world. I vowed to change that whenever I could. On my last trip there, my opportunity arose. My last full day in DC was packed with meetings, but I woke up early that morning to find out that they had been canceled. I decided to explore the Navy Yard neighborhood that day. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I'd book a Navy Yard hotel room with HotelTonight when I was ready to sleep.
The "Cool" Factor
One of the images that I tended to form in my mind before I got to Washington, D.C. for the first time was that the city was a bit boring and drab, as a lot of official government business is not all that exciting. I was completely wrong about that, and as soon as I made my way to the Navy Yard neighborhood I knew I had discovered a very cool place. There were music venues all over, outdoor restaurants, young professionals playing with their dogs and people having a very good time.
The River
Navy Yard's southern border is set by the Anacostia River, and based on what I saw people there are constantly doing things to make the river an integral part of the neighborhood. I saw a lot of people walking along the shoreline. I saw people kayaking and swimming, and just having a good time in open green spaces next to the river. Dogs were having a blast cooling off in the water on a very warm and sunny day. This is a river that adds to the fabric of the environment of Navy Yard.
The Dining
Seeing so much of the river that day put me in the mood for seafood, and I heard about a place that's known as a raw bar just up the road. I went there for dinner. The place itself looked like an old loft, and I started with some raw oysters. They were deliciously fresh and tangy, and not at all chewy as oysters tend to be if they're out for too long. For my cooked portion, I went with the fried oysters, and they may have been even better than the ones I had that were raw.
