When you spend time in New York City, you get to experience a lot of things, and basically all of them feel like something you would experience in a big city. That obviously makes sense given that New York is one of the largest cities in the world, and the people who both live there and visit there likely understand and accept the fact that when you're in the Big Apple, you're going to experience the lifestyle of a big city. But is there anywhere in the area that feels a bit different? Is there a spot or are there pockets in New York that have more of a small-town feel? Since I travel there often, I wanted to find out. I always enjoyed my time in New York but wanted to see if there was anything else out there that was different. I heard about a place called Riverdale in the Bronx. I had heard it felt a bit different and I wanted to see it for myself on my last trip there. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay nearby, as I travel with HotelTonight. The History
Riverdale is situated on cliffs that overlook the Hudson River, so it feels different as soon as you get there and see the landscape. I stopped in a cafe and talked to a local who told me that this used to be a place where the wealthy would spend their summers. That made sense, as you can still see some of the old mansions there. Since then, more families have moved in and you see things like single-family homes and front lawns that you don't see in many places around New York. It's also relatively quiet and laid back.
The Demographics
I didn't conduct any sort of demographic survey while I was in Riverdale, but I did pay attention to what I saw and to whom I spoke with during the day. I saw an enormous Irish community. There were Irish flags in a lot of windows and quite a few Irish establishments around the community with Irish names. I stopped in for a pint at one of the pubs and was told that yes, there is a very strong Irish influence here and that there has been for generations.
The Cuisine
Since I had found myself in a largely Irish neighborhood, I decided to go to one of the most popular Irish restaurants in the area. I sat down in this unassuming and small place and ordered a pint and the fish and chips. It was wonderful. The fish was fresh and crispy, the chips were soggy but not too soggy and the whirled peas underneath the fish complimented all of the flavors perfectly. I also enjoyed the live Irish music and some very pleasant conversation with the people near my table.
