When someone says that a city is beautiful, it can be difficult to know what that person means. It could mean that the architecture of the city is beautiful, that the weather is beautiful or that the people who live there are beautifully friendly and welcoming. It could also mean many or all of those things. When I think of New York, I think of a beautiful city, but I can't quite articulate why I feel that way. It is home to countless beautiful places, but it's also so big that it's hard to pinpoint one quality that dominates all of the New York area. I guess that's why I love to explore the Big Apple so much. I find something different – and beautiful – every time I'm there. On my last trip, I had 24 hours at my disposal due to a confluence of events. I decided to use that 24 hours to explore the West Village in Manhattan. The Quiet
There are a lot of different words that come to mind when I think of New York, but quiet is not one of them. You can walk the streets in the middle of the night and still hear a lot of noise from people and vehicles. That's really not the case in the West Village. One of the first things that I noticed was that it was quiet there, to the point where I was almost a bit startled when I did hear a horn honking a couple of blocks away. It was a nice change of pace from the rest of downtown.
The Residential Aspect
Another aspect of New York that I had almost come to take for granted as I spent time in different parts of the city were the skyscrapers. It always seemed to me like you couldn't go more than a block or two without seeing them dominate the skyline. Once again, that's not how things work in the West Village. This is primarily a residential area, filled with lovely apartment buildings that sit along cobblestone streets. There is a distinct lack of office space here, at least the kind you'd come to expect in other parts of Manhattan.
The Food
As it turned out, even the food in the West Village had a quiet, laid-back feel to it. A couple of locals told me about a bistro that had been in the neighborhood for years. I decided to try it as I heard their hamburgers were fantastic. I ordered one and the folks who said that were right. The hamburger was big and thick and had a pile of bacon on top of it. It was cooked perfectly and placed on a nice, soft bun. The setting itself was true West Village – aesthetically pleasing and relaxed.
