One of the many, many unique things about New York City is the multiple layers of history that are present on seemingly every street corner. You can walk from neighborhood to neighborhood for days and never hear the same story about how that part of town came to be twice. Yes, every city has some history behind it to an extent, but I've never experienced a place that is so packed with interesting tidbits and that has been through so many different eras. This is one of the main reasons that I've long been so fascinated with the Big Apple. I've been exploring it for a long time, and I've been doing so thanks to the fact that I travel there often for work. I like to take 24 hours for myself at the end of each trip and explore one neighborhood exclusively. On my last trip, I decided to take a deep dive into the Lower East Side. The History
New York is a city of immigrants, and it has been ever since it was originally named New Amsterdam for obvious reasons. Not only is it a city of immigrants, but immigrants from different parts of the world settled in different parts of the city at different times. Initially, the Lower East Side was settled by people who primarily arrived from different parts of Eastern Europe. Over time, the area was settled by Latinos. What's interesting is that you can still see a lot of the influences from each of those cultures today as you walk around. It's a nice fit between those different worlds.
The Buildings
During the time when the Lower East Side was dominated by immigrants from different places, it was also home to a lot of different industries. For instance, garment factories were common here several generations ago. These days, a lot of those buildings still stand, although almost all of them have obviously received makeovers. What you see now are a lot of different lofts and newer looking apartment buildings that used to be tenements for the people who lived here. It's an old-meets-new type of look, and it looks quite good.
The Cuisine
Given how the Lower East Side has been home to so many people from so many different parts of the world, it should come as no surprise that there are restaurants from nearly every point on the map here. I decided to have some Mexican food, as I heard about a place that had attracted quite a following. It took one bite into my carne asada plate to understand why. The meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly and it was tender, which is not easy for this type of beef. The fixin's were also tremendous.
