Millions of people visit New York City every year, and I'm one of those people who make it a habit of seeing what there is to see there and getting to know the area as well as possible. I travel to the Big Apple often for work, and I always make it a point to explore a new neighborhood every time I'm there. I do so because there is another level to the city that tourists and even frequent visitors do not see. This is the foundation of New York, and it's what leads to what the rest of us experience. On my last trip to the city for work, I chose to explore the neighborhood of Gramercy Park. I had never spent any real time there, but I planned on taking 24 solid hours for myself and getting to know the area and the people as much as possible. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, as I would handle that when I was ready to get some sleep that night. The Vibe
As soon as you start walking around in Gramercy Park, you realize that there is a certain something different about this area as opposed to the rest of Manhattan, much less New York. In essence, Gramercy Park is a bit of a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's relatively quiet and laid-back, and the people here seem to not be in as much of a hurry to get to their next engagement as others around town. They even seem to have time to stop and talk to you if you.
The Architecture
The homes and commercial buildings in Gramercy Park catch your eye quickly. They are old, classical and in some cases ornate. There are little details on a lot of the different buildings that you have to look closely at to notice, but thanks to my camera I was able to capture some little statues attached to the corners of brownstones and the like. It should be noted that this was classically an extremely affluent area, as prominent families such as the Roosevelts used to call Gramercy Park home. You can still see that influence today, especially in the price of housing.
The Cuisine
It only seems proper that a high-end neighborhood would offer high-end choices for cuisine. I decided to go with a farm-to-table place that I had heard about from one of the residents earlier in the day. I was glad I made that choice. The salad was scrumptious. The greens were crunchy and burst with flavor, and the tomatoes had such a pop they almost added spice to the mix. The chicken I had was so fresh it tasted nothing like what you'd buy in a store. It was delicious.
