HotelTonight – Vinegar Hill Brooklyn Hotels at the Ready
When you walk through almost any part of New York City, you see a place that you're sure has been completely explored and maximized in terms of its development. Sure, most of the areas in the city have gone through at least one transformation over time, but there couldn't possibly be any part of the Big Apple that had yet to be discovered by the masses. There were simply too many people around and too many options for living and having fun for anything to have been overlooked. Perhaps that wasn't the case, though, as I had heard about a certain neighborhood in Brooklyn during one of my regular work trips to New York. That place is known as Vinegar Hill, and I decided on my most recent trip to carve out 24 hours to see it. I couldn't wait to find out if what I had heard was true or a myth, but either way it was going to be fun. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, either, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. It would find me a Brooklyn hotel room as soon as I was ready.
The Size
The first thing that hit me when I got out of my ride and started to walk around in Vinegar Hill was the size of the community, or more specifically the lack thereof. I was so surprised that I had to look it up, and according to the United States Census Bureau there are fewer than 600 residents living there. That actually made sense to look at the place, though, as it was incredibly quiet and not in the least bit crowded or congested. Could this really be an undiscovered neighborhood? Was it possible for such a place to exist in New York?
The Architecture
There are a lot of places in and around New York that have undergone massive transformations in recent years. Buildings have been torn down, new ones have been built and other older buildings have been re-purposed to accommodate more modern needs. When you walk around in Vinegar Hill, it looks as though the buildings that have been in place for decades if not longer are relatively untouched. It results in a quaint, quasi-historic feel to the community and it gives off a distinctive personality to the place that's hard to define but easy to notice.
The Dining
Given the size of Vinegar Hill, there aren't many restaurants from which to choose in this little community. Fortunately, everyone I spoke to pointed out a place that the locals adore and patronize with an intense loyalty. I sat outside on the back patio, surrounded by an old wooden fence, and enjoyed a plate of beef tenderloin that was hard to describe. It was tender, juicy and seasoned with spices that I could not name and that the staff would not tell me about, naturally. It was delicious and a wonderful meal.
