New York is not only one of the biggest cities in the world and a center for culture, business and the like, but it's also something that I consider to be a living, breathing thing. That's because New York, like every human being on the planet, is constantly growing and changing with the times. It's an interesting process to watch, as New York is anything but some homogeneous metropolis filled with busy people hustling down concrete streets between tall buildings. There is a lot more happening here, and I've been making it a point to explore the Big Apple on a much deeper level than I had when I was younger. I've done so by choosing one neighborhood every time I'm in town and spending 24 hours there exclusively. It provides a closer look into what's happening there and removes any time pressure that could push me to try to see too much too soon. On my last trip there, I decided to spend 24 hours in the Tribeca neighborhood in Manhattan. Old and New
You can see how the Tribeca neighborhood is growing and changing with the times by way of its evolving architecture. You can walk down just about any block in the neighborhood, and you'll see a mixture of brand-new and modern apartment buildings standing alongside some very old, traditional and gorgeous buildings that have to be at least 100 years old. This can lead to an awkward overall look, but the folks here have pulled it off masterfully. Everything seems to fit together neatly, as if the buildings are somehow related.
Changing Demographics
It used to be the case, 30 or 40 years ago, that Tribeca was known as a haven for the artists, writers and poets of New York. Since then, as is the case with its architecture, things are not the same. These days, Tribeca is a high-end community for the affluent, and you can see that in several ways. Real estate here is extremely expensive, the clothing stores offer nothing but the finest, and the vehicles you see parked are generally high-cost machines that you wouldn't expect to see in a city like this one where automobiles are not necessarily important.
The Cuisine
It should come as no surprise that the dining in this part of New York is also high-end. I had heard about a local place, however, that only served local ingredients whenever possible, and I wanted to give that a try. I was glad I did. I had what I thought would be a basic hamburger and a salad, but it was far from basic. The burger was delicious – juicy, seasoned properly and cooked to perfection. The salad popped with flavor, and the atmosphere was extremely welcoming and relaxed.
