The more I see New York, the more I realize that it's a place that's almost a dichotomy in many ways. There is the old and the new, and for the most part it seems as though these two forces are coming together quite smoothly and comfortably. I've explored neighborhoods all over the city, and what were once neighborhoods dominated by immigrants from specific countries now appear to be communities where those roots are being preserved to an extent but also opening themselves to new developments and cultural influences. I enjoy watching all of this happen, and there is no better example of it than New York. I recently found myself with 24 hours to spare, and I decided to spend those 24 hours exploring the Prospect Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn. I had heard that there was a lot of new joining the old there and I wanted to see it. The Old
For generations, Prospect Heights was a neighborhood that was dominated by influences from both the African-American community and different communities from Caribbean countries. These two influences created a community that was rich in art, dining, expression and of course a sense of family and community. You can still see a lot of that influence as you walk around in Prospect Heights through everything from the restaurants that line the streets to the grocery stores that sell special products to the businesses that cater to the families that live there and have likely done so for generations.
The New
As is the case with many places in New York, there is an influx of younger people moving into Prospect Heights. This is likely due to the fact that the area is still relatively affordable compared to other parts of New York, but it's also likely happening because this is a welcoming place. I saw quite a few young professionals hustling to work and sauntering home after a long day. I saw young families pushing their young children around in strollers. I also saw some new gastropubs and the like that were open for business. It was an interesting mix to say the least, but one that worked extremely well.
The Dining
I have to admit that I'm a total sucker for Caribbean food. I heard about a Jamaican place in the neighborhood that had been thriving for many years. I decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. The jerk chicken was sublime. Too many places put too much spice in it, but this place got it right. There was some heat involved with it but there was also a lot of flavor that was not drowned out by the other ingredients.
