HotelTonight – Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn Hotels Just for You
New York City is one of the biggest and perhaps, at least to me, the most interesting city in the world. It's almost like its own universe contained within a relatively small amount of geographic space. It's so big in terms of population, things happening and diversity of things to see and do that it's almost difficult to comprehend. I've always found it to be a place that's fun to explore, and I've been doing just that for a long time. What I like to do is, whenever I'm in town, find a way to carve out 24 hours for myself to explore one neighborhood in particular. This gives me the opportunity to dig deeply into that community and get to know it well. On my last work trip to New York, I did find an extra 24 hours, and I decided I'd use it to explore the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn. I had heard a lot about it and wanted to see it for myself. The Transformation
There was a time when Bed-Stuy, as it's known there, was an area that was quite down on its luck. The crime rate was high and the vibe was one that was not positive in nature. However, over the past 20 years or so, as is the case with quite a few places in Brooklyn, there has been a lot of redevelopment happening there. Old buildings are getting facelifts, new buildings are replacing some old ones and the business community is making a comeback. It's always exciting to see a neighborhood come back around.
The Sense of Community
As much as things are changing in Bed-Stuy, there are certain aspects of the community that remain, and they even feel like they're being protected. One of those aspects is the foundational sense of community that exists here. There's a very active community association in the neighborhood. I saw literature for meetings and events all over the place. I saw people who stopped to talk to each other as though they had been living together for generations, and in many cases that's probably what was happening. As strange as it sounds, there was a bit of a small-town feel to Bed-Stuy.
The Cuisine
When a neighborhood is developing, restaurants tend to come with it. I heard about a place that specialized in Southern food, and I wanted to try it. I had the fried chicken, and it packed a big punch of spice. It was the proper amount, though, in that it was spicy but not to the point where you can't savor the flavor of the meet or the crunchy skin. It was delicious, as was the creamy macaroni and cheese I had as a side.
