New York City is perhaps the trendiest city in the entire world. Fashion trends get their start here. Cultural trends gather momentum here. Basically, things that start here tend to spread to the rest of the world, and that's one of the many reasons that this place is so unique. I've always enjoyed the trend-setting aspect of the Big Apple, as it signifies that this is a place of extreme importance, whether you live there, visit there often or you've never even been there. I've been to New York a lot, and I've experienced many of the trendy and hip places. I've enjoyed myself in all of them. On my last trip, however, I wanted to spend some time in the more traditional areas of New York, as the history of the city has always fascinated me as well. I had to head there for meetings recently, so I booked my return flight for 24 hours after my meetings were over so I could explore the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Museums
You can't get more historic than museums, obviously, and the Upper East Side is home to an enormous number of them. There's even an area in the community that's known as the Museum Mile. I spent several hours there walking through some amazing exhibits. The Met, the Guggenheim and several other world-renowned museums and collections can be found here, and what was most surprising to me was that they were all within about a 15-minute walk from each other. It really is a mile where you'll find several museums, and you can see them all in one day.
The Park
You can't spend time on the Upper East Side without spending some time in Central Park. I had only driven past it during my previous trips, but that day was the day I was going to see if it really was that beautiful. It was, and then some. It's much larger than I would have imagined, but I also expected it to be loud and a bit dirty. It was neither of those things. It was as if you were stepping outside of the city in a moment, and you forgot all about the bustle when you were there.
The Cuisine
In a place with so much, it came as no surprise that there were many choices for cuisine. Someone in the park told me about a Thai place that was quite popular, so I gave that a try. I'm glad I did. It wasn't a big place by any stretch, but it wasn't too small so as to seem cramped, either. The food was tremendous, as I'm always a sucker for spicy Asian fare. I sat and ate happily, even talking a bit with the people at the table next to mine.
