HotelTonight – Financial District Manhattan Hotels Just for You
Everything about New York City is big. They may use that word, and appropriately so, for Texas, but it also applies to the Big Apple in a big way. One of the many things that's big in New York is the finance community, so much so that an entire neighborhood exists with that name. I've been through the Financial District in Manhattan for work many times, but I've never really taken the time to get to know it in terms of what life is like here. That's what happens when all you do is rush from one meeting to the next. On my last trip to New York, I decided to book my return flight for 24 hours after I finished my work obligations. I was going to use that time to explore the neighborhood and get a feel for what things are like there on a different level. The Changes
For decades, the Financial District was exactly that--a part of New York where the big banks operated and Wall Street types "wheeled and dealed" their way through the business day. There really wasn't much else happening there, as it was almost like the entire neighborhood kept banker's hours. Things are changing. The area is incorporating more residences, and people are flocking to those opportunities. Most of the folks who ware moving here are young professionals. This tends to happen when formerly non-residential neighborhoods open themselves up to this type of development. This also gives the area a vibrant feel.
Stone Street
Stone Street was the first street paved with stone in the entire city, back when New York was known as New Amsterdam. The first pavement went down in 1658, or more than 100 years before the United States came about. It fell on hard times for a while, but over the past 15 – 20 years it's been revitalized. Only pedestrians are allowed to use the narrow street, which makes it a natural fit for outdoor restaurants, cafes and watering holes. It's a fun, festive little place that provides a bit of a break from the bustle of New York.
The Cuisine
Given the new development that's happening in FiDi, as it's known to the locals, it was no surprise that there were a lot of options for dinner. I decided to go for a nice pizza, as that seemed like the right way to go. I found a place that served it in almost a tavern setting, and the oven-baked pie was something special. The crust was New York thin and tasty, the toppings were almost falling off of the crust and the cheese oozed everywhere.
