One of the most amazing things about New York City to me is how so many different cultures and backgrounds can come together to form one community. Yes, it's an enormous community – one of the biggest in the world – but it's still a place that has a certain vibe to it such that you know you're in New York when you're in New York. If you forget, there will be someone nearby to remind you of it. I love that about the Big Apple, and that's why I've dedicated so much time to exploring it every chance I get. Fortunately, I travel there for work quite often, and that gives me an opportunity to check things out on a bit of a deeper level. On my last work trip there, I somehow managed to finagle 24 free hours to myself before having to fly home. I decided to use that 24 hours to explore the neighborhood of Crown Heights in Brooklyn. The Stoops
Stoops are a strange thing to notice in any city, or even in any setting. That said, I could not get over how important the stoops seem to be in Crown Heights. It was a warm and sunny day, and as I walked down the streets of the neighborhood I saw countless people sitting on the stoops in front of their homes, talking with neighbors who were either passing by or stopping in for a short visit. It was a classic New York scene right out of the world of old movies, but it seemed as though the stoops were the coffee shops of Crown Heights.
The Dining
Given the strong Caribbean influence in the neighborhood, I decided to have some food from that part of the world. I heard about a place that served incredible jerk chicken, which is a weakness of mine. The place had been there for a while, and it was unique in its look with aqua walls and comfortable seating. The chicken itself was sublime. It was tender, juicy and it had just the right amount of heat to it to make it a truly Caribbean treat.
