HotelTonight – Visalia Hotels are Available
It's interesting to me that a lot of people are not aware of just how much food California grows for the rest of the United States. Most people who have not spent time there think of the Golden State, as a mix of beaches, bridges and enormous cities. While there is certainly a lot of modernity in California, there is also a very large geographic part of the state that is utterly rural. I would know, for as a traveling salesperson I drive through what is known as the Central Valley all the time. There isn't much there in terms of population, but it has its own unique beauty about it. One thing I've never really done, however, was pay attention to the communities that dot the landscape there. I'm usually enjoying the scenery and trying to get to my destination as quickly as possible. On my last trip, though, I encountered car trouble near a place called Visalia. Fortunately, I was able to get my car towed into town, where I was told that it'd be the next morning before I'd be ready to go. The Size
I was quite surprised to find out once I got into Visalia that approximately 130,000 people call it home. I thought it was much smaller than that. Regardless, Visalia is very much a place with a small-town feel to it. As I walked around downtown, I saw a lot of old buildings with brick facades, all of which were meticulously maintained. I saw clean streets, business owners and locals walking around, greeting each other warmly and with familiarity. This was a friendly place, as I was also greeted often.
The Farmer's Market
As luck would have it, I happened to be in Visalia on the day that they have their weekly farmer's market. Since I was in the middle of the agricultural land of California, I was intrigued. I saw what looked more like a festival than a farmer's market, as I heard music, saw people dancing and even children playing. I ate corn on the cob that was delicious and sampled quite a few different types of produce as I walked around. I wished I had more time, but I wanted to walk around town some more.
The Dining
That night, I decided to try a brew pub that I had heard about more than once throughout the day. It had several different types of local brews, and I tasted a few of them, all of which were very tasty. I also had the mushroom burger and fries, and it was fantastic. The mushrooms covered the beef patty and the fries were perfectly cooked and crispy. I ate happily, had another beer and sat and talked to some locals for a while as I relaxed.
