The Lake
Without a doubt, Woodlawn Lake's showstopper is, as the name suggests, the lake. Even though Woodlawn Lake is a rather little body of water, it's a pretty, relaxing place where locals go to enjoy a bit of nature, go for runs and bike rides and meet up with friends for picnics on the weekends. During my short stay in San Antonio, I took advantage of this beautiful urban lake, and went for walks and bike rides along the lake. I even took a canoe out on the water one afternoon. You won't find any tourists at Woodlawn Lake, as this is a local gem that is far off the beaten tourist path, which is why I was so glad to have discovered it during my time in San Antonio.
The Deco District
Woodlawn Lake is located in San Antonio's "Deco District," a neighborhood that was originally part of the Old Spanish Trail, the very first paved coast-to-coast highway in the country. Thus, the history of this neighborhood runs deep, like the Deco District is where the famed Tex-Mex cuisine was born. The Deco District is full of colorful street art, history buildings and popular local eateries, and exploring this area will give you a real feel for what it's like to actually live in San Antonio.
Monticello Park
Monticello Park was one of the very first suburbs in San Antonio, so naturally this area holds a special place in the hearts of San Antonio locals. Many of the buildings and homes in this historic district were built in the 1920s, and you'll see an eclectic range of architectural styles, from English Tudor to Craftsman bungalow, when you wander the streets. If you're looking for charm and character in San Antonio, you'll definitely find it in Monticello Park.
