HotelTonight – Great Northwest San Antonio
Located, you guessed it, in the northwest corner of San Antonio, the Great Northwest shines as one of the city's most coveted communities. This suburb is comprised of around 5,000 homes, many of which are single-family homes, since the Great Northwest is an ideal place to raise children. This neighborhood offers plenty of family-friendly recreation and entertainment options, as well as beautiful homes and well-maintained community centers. And, of course, if you want to venture out of the suburbs and into the city, it's an easy drive to downtown San Antonio. Recently, I had the chance to visit the Great Northwest neighborhood of San Antonio and this pretty suburb pleasantly surprised me. Recreation
Since the Great Northwest is located a bit outside of the hustle and bustle of the city center, there are no major tourist attractions or popular museums to visit. Instead, this neighborhood features countless recreational spaces for its residents to enjoy. During my short time in the Great Northwest, I came across a number of public pools, basketball courts, playgrounds, soccer fields and tennis courts, all of which were being used by locals. Naturally, it didn't take me long to understand why the Great Northwest is such a desirable place for San Antonio residents to live.
Natural Parks
A short drive away from the Great Northwest, you'll find the Government Canyon State Natural Area, a nature preserve where locals hike, mountain bike and enjoy picnics. Sprawling over 12,244 acres, this park boasts more than 40 miles of trails, ranging from easy to difficult. No matter what your level of fitness, you'll be able to find a trail in Government Canyon that you'll enjoy. Since I wanted to experience life like a local in the Great Northwest neighborhood of San Antonio, I listened to the advice of some locals and explored one of the paths in Government Canyon, which took me to a beautiful creek in the middle of a lush, forested area--a perfect spot for a stunning photo.
Shopping
Whether you're looking for a nice evening outfit for an event or a pair of new headphones, you'll have no problem finding what you need in the Great Northwest. There are many great shopping areas and malls nearby, including the Ingram Park Mall and Westover Marketplace. While I don't normally like spending my days shopping while exploring a new city, I needed to buy some hiking boots before hitting the trail and was able to quickly find a great pair thanks to the abundance of shopping in this area.
