Wine country in Northern California is like nothing else I've ever seen in the United States. I'm a world traveler, so I've seen areas in France and Italy that somewhat remind me of this unique American place. Having spent time in all 50 states, I always look forward to driving through wine country for a lot of different reasons. First, the rolling hills and general landscape are breathtakingly gorgeous. Secondly, the weather is almost always perfect, which is one of the reasons people make wine there in the first place. Finally, the entire region is seemingly so filled with happiness that I can't help but feel that even with the little bit of interaction I've had with residents there. Fortunately, I got a chance to interact with them more during my recent drive through the area. I got a call that told me that my entire day of meetings was canceled, suddenly giving me 24 hours to do with as I pleased. I decided to stop where I was and explore Carmel Valley. The Hiking
The rolling hills leading into this city of around 4,000 people were on my mind for quite some time. I'm an avid hiker and was really excited to get a crack at one of the trails near town. As soon as I got near one, I pulled over, changed quickly and hit a trailhead. The hike was amazing. I walked up and down in the hills, enjoyed the splashing sunlight that seemed to add a layer of color everywhere and took a ton of photos of things I had never seen before.
The Shopping
I've long believed that one of the best ways to get to know a community is to visit its locally-owned shops and businesses. It's there you'll find people who tend to know the most about what life is like in a particular place. I did that after my hike, and I really enjoyed the different shops and the plethora of products offered. I bought a few clothing items and pieces of decor for my home, all the while talking to workers and shop owners about things in general. It was obvious that everyone there seems to be quite happy.
The Dining
I heard about a place, while shopping that's almost a local legend in terms of restaurants, so that's where I decided to eat that night. I walked in and got a feeling of comfort and informality, which I prefer. The food was outstanding. I had the abalone to start, which was incredible, and then had the salmon for dinner along with some local greens that were exploding with flavor. Of course, I also enjoyed a nice glass of local wine, as that's something I felt like I should do in this part of the world.
