HotelTonight – Lakeview New Orleans Hotels
There are certain images that come to mind when one thinks of New Orleans. Common examples include marching bands, dancing in the streets, festive celebrations, Mardi Gras and of course world-class cuisine. While all of these images are certainly part of the fabric that is New Orleans, there is so much more out there that completes the picture that is the Crescent City. For years now, I've been wanting to explore those relatively unknown factors in this community that in some ways form the foundation of it. I've been doing so recently by taking 24 hours for myself every time I am there for work. I use those 24 hours to explore one specific neighborhood per trip. This allows me the time to really dig deeply into a community and it removes the time pressure that's present when you're trying to see too much too quickly. On my most recent trip, I chose to explore the Lakeview neighborhood. I hadn't been there before, but I was excited to see it. I wasn't concerned about lodging, either, as I travel with HotelTonight. It found me a Lakeview New Orleans hotel as soon as I was ready for one.
The History
Lakeview has a long and distinguished history in New Orleans. It was originally settled by an order of priests who lived there for generations. Eventually, they sold the land to a Spanish mogul who was known for his wealth. Over time, the area changed hands more than once, a canal was built to help bring goods to and from the community across Lake Pontchartrain, and other developers began to build homes and other settlements along the lakefront. Since then, this is a neighborhood that features the water prominently, but that was not necessarily common over 100 years ago.
The Comeback
Anyone who has any familiarity with New Orleans likely remembers the utter devastation brought about by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Unfortunately, Lakefront was one of the neighborhoods that suffered the most across the entire area. Buildings were destroyed, flood waters wreaked havoc and infrastructure was annihilated. I saw pictures of the aftermath of the storm, and to see how far Lakefront has come since then is nothing short of remarkable. While the comeback has been inspiring, it's far from over, as there are still builders around rehabilitating or rebuilding homes and commercial buildings.
The Cuisine
Since the community is located along a body of water, I felt like having some seafood for dinner. I was told about a place that specialized in it, so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did, as the seafood was impeccable. I had scallops that were cooked with a glaze that added an incredible amount of flavor to the entire dish, and the steamed vegetables tasted as though they came directly from a garden outside the backdoor. I enjoyed the food and the homey, welcoming atmosphere tremendously.
