New Orleans is a city where you'll find something fascinating in just about every nook and cranny. I've been traveling to the Crescent City for many years, but it was only recently that I realized that I should be doing things a bit differently. Instead of just seeing as much as possible as quickly as possible while there, I decided to take 24 hours and dedicate them to experiencing one neighborhood. The Historic Atmosphere
One of the many things that I find fascinating and beautiful about New Orleans is its architecture. Things look different here, whether you're talking about commercial buildings or homes. That combination of Spanish, French and Creole style is unforgettable. It really hits you over the head when you walk around in Espalande Ridge. This is an old neighborhood, and the homes here are also quite old. Many of them were built in the 19th century, and it's obvious that the people who lived here when they were built were in the upper stratospheres of the city economically.
The Arts Scene
For whatever reason, when I walked around in Espalande Ridge, I began to notice that there was a lot of artistic influence here. After looking into it a bit further and talking to a few locals, I found out that this neighborhood is one of the main parts of town for people who are into art, music and theater. There are quite a few galleries here and studios dot the landscape. I always enjoy a neighborhood with a heavy artistic influence, as it adds that tasteful touch to everything you see from the homes to the businesses to the streets themselves.
The Cuisine
A neighborhood like this one has to have a neighborhood restaurant, and sure enough, Espalande Ridge has one. I heard about it and decided to eat dinner there. The menu featured French food, which was hardly surprising, but there was also a Creole influence present. I had the sea bass that was lightly blackened, and it was absolutely fantastic. It flaked right off of your fork and that spice gave it that little kick of heat that added pleasure, not pain.
