When you visit New Orleans, Louisiana, you never know what you're going to encounter. However, there are certain things that you can be sure you will experience. Those things include fabulous food, incredible scenery, gorgeous architecture and people who are so friendly it's almost hard to believe. I always jump at any chance to spend time in New Orleans, as I've always found myself wondering what it would be like to live here. I think that way because the vibe of the Big Easy is such that I can't imagine how anyone could be unhappy in this place. In order to get to know the place a bit better and to understand at what life is like here at least on a somewhat deeper level, I've been exploring one neighborhood per 24 hours spent in this lovely city. Doing so allows me the time to get to know people a bit and to avoid worrying about seeing and doing everything. Recently, I spent 24 hours in the Arts District, and it was a wonderful day. The History
A lot of people still refer to the Arts District as the Warehouse District, and that's both a nod to the buildings that are prevalent here as well as to the history of the area. For decades, this was the part of New Orleans that was dedicated to commerce, shipping, receiving and storage. As such, warehouses were built to house the goods. Many of these warehouses still stand today, but in recent years they've been refurbished to the point where they now house almost exclusively modern operations and concerns.
The Arts Community
Of course, warehouses are also great spaces for anyone who is interested in pursuing anything artistic. They are generally large and wide open, and for the most part the properties were affordable over time. As you walk around the Arts District now, you'll see studio after studio in these warehouses and gallery after gallery displaying the finished works. There's always something about any small community that is home to a lot of artists in that it has a certain creative feel, almost as though anyone with almost any idea is welcome there. That's what it's like in the Arts District in New Orleans.
The Cuisine
You can't spend time in New Orleans without experiencing its dining options. I've traveled all over the world, and I consider this to be the best food city in the world. I heard about a place that's family-owned and that has been there through the transformation of the area. I went there and had creole shrimp that was so juicy and tasty I couldn't stop eating them. I also enjoyed the scrumptious sides of greens and grits. Everything tasted natural and proper.
