HotelTonight – Downtown Memphis Hotels Near You
Memphis, Tennessee is one of those cities that tends to evoke certain images and emotions in people who have been there. For some, it's all about the barbecue or other dishes that make up the city's famous cuisine. For others, it's about listening to the blues in a live venue unlike any other place in the United States. I have experienced Memphis more than once, and I've fallen in love with it several times over. My feelings towards Memphis have gotten to the point where I wanted to take my knowledge of this beautiful place to another level. Therefore, when I travel here for work, I now make sure to schedule my return flight for 24 hours after my work obligations are complete. I choose one neighborhood to explore deeply. The first time I did this, I chose to spend the 24 carved out for myself downtown. There's really no better place to start to get to know a city. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, either, as I had my HotelTonight app with me. It would find me a downtown Memphis hotel in no time flat.
The Transformation
It's amazing to think of how downtown Memphis has changed over the years. Since it sits on the Mississippi River, this part of town used to be almost nothing but warehouses that held goods that were shipped to and from Memphis. That's nowhere near what this part of town looks like now. The warehouses have been put to use, but in a much different way. They have been refurbished to house homes and all different types of businesses. What's interesting is that you can still see the commerce-driven roots of downtown, but the vibe here is one that is totally alive.
The History
While I never really thought about it much until I started to visit here regularly, Memphis is the city where a lot of history--both positive and extremely negative--occurred, and you can see quite a bit of it downtown. The National Civil Rights Museum, near where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed is here. You can also see the music studio where Elvis Presley recorded his first songs and even his first hit. You can feel all of that history when you walk around in this area, but it's not overdone in any sense.
The Cuisine
You can't spend time in downtown Memphis without sampling some of the city's famous cuisine. I wanted some of that good old fashioned fried chicken, and a local told me about a place that I wouldn't necessarily read about online. I found it, and after a short wait I sat down and ordered. The chicken was incredible. The skin was crispy and tasty, and the chicken itself was juicy and tender. There was no grease, either. It was amazing.
