HotelTonight – Missouri Hotels in Seconds
I was ready for The Show Me State to show me a lot of things that would get my mind off of the drudgery of my routine. I had just finished a conference in St. Louis for work and decided to stay a few extra days to explore a place I had never really seen before. I did so because every now and then I just need a break from it all, and when I travel I do so by adhering to a strict rule of no schedules and no agendas. I just go where the road takes me. The only resource I wanted to be sure to have at my disposal was something that could help me find a Missouri hotel room when I needed one. Since I knew I'd have my phone with me wherever I was, I figured I'd need that resource to be accessible with it.
I searched for an app that helped people find hotel rooms at the last minute, as I didn't know where I was going to wind up on any given day and didn't want to face some long drive to get to a destination if I was enjoying myself. I found one called HotelTonight, and it was a quick and easy download. There were a lot of options for Missouri hotel rooms already available based on my location. This was a real-time app and I was impressed. I also liked the information available, specifically the user reviews that were present with a majority of the properties. I was confident that I would find what I needed during my travels with HotelTonight, so I set out to explore Missouri. I wanted to do some offbeat things along with seeing some cities that everyone was familiar with.
Missouri and Caves
I used to think about a lot of different things when I was talking about Missouri for whatever reason, but caves was never one of them. When I started driving around, though, I noticed a lot of different places that invited people in to take a look at caves. I went and saw a few and did some quick reading on it. As it turns out, there are more than 6,000 caves in Missouri, so I decided to spend a day at Meramec State Park, walking through these eerie and beautiful structures that take you underground and generally away from any sunlight.
Missouri and Barbecue
I am a bit of a foodie, so when I travel somewhere I want to enjoy the cuisine that a certain area is known for around the world. When you talk about Missouri and cuisine, you're talking about barbecue, and there's no better place for barbecue than Kansas City. I went to a barbecue place and actually got a tour. They cook enormous amounts of meat on an even larger smoker, so it's all slow-cooked over wood fires that burn pretty much all day, every day. The brisket I had cooked for 16 hours, and it practically fell apart before I could get it into my mouth.
Missouri and the Pony Express
There is a lot of history tied to Missouri. These days, we take things like mail and shipping completely for granted, but for generations sending things to others was arduous at best. I drove into St. Joseph, Missouri, home of the Pony Express Museum. It's here because St. Joseph was the starting point for the Pony Express. It ran from St. Joseph to Sacramento, California, which is a distance of 1,800 miles. It lasted only 18 months, but it remains a historic piece of trivia with real surviving landmarks.
Missouri and… Earthquakes?
Earthquakes are tied to places like California, but definitely not Missouri. I learned differently, though, when I spent part of a day in New Madrid. It was here that the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the United States occurred, back in 1812. Measurements were somewhat different then, but at the museum commemorating this disaster I was told that it shook the ground for more than one million square miles and could be felt as far as 1,000 miles away. Some experts are concerned that the New Madrid Fault Line could move again in the future.

As I drove back to St. Louis to catch my flight home, I congratulated myself for taking some time for me. I spent it here in Missouri, and that turned out to be a good decision. I saw a lot of things I never knew existed and talked to a lot of very nice people.
