When people mention large cities in the United States that they've been to many times, you hear a lot of similar places. One place that you don't hear all that often is Louisville, Kentucky. That's too bad, as the people who have not spent time there are really missing out on something great. That's also just fine with the people who live in the area, as this is not a place that judges itself on the number of visitors it attracts per year or the size of its population. Louisville is just fine being Louisville, and everyone is welcome there. I know this because I've been traveling to Louisville for a long time, and one day I finally decided that I needed to see more of it than I did while there for work. I started working in an extra day in Louisville so I could see one neighborhood per work trip. On my last trip, I chose to visit the East End. I hadn't seen it before, but was excited to explore it. The History
One of the first things you hear about the East End when you arrive is its history. I like to stop at a cafe when I get to a place to see if I can strike up a conversation with a local. I did that day and a man told me that parts of the East End can trace its roots back to the late 18th century, just after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Since then, this part of town has grown and changed with the times, but there are apparently still quite a few older homes there.
The Nature
After such a nice conversation, I wanted to get out and enjoy the beautiful day and talk to others. There are several beautiful parks here in the East End, and I found one with a walking/bicycling trail that takes you through pieces of nature that will have you swearing that you're somewhere rural. I talked to a few more people about what it's like to live there, and what I found was that you'll find people from all walks of life here and that everyone who lives here is quite happy with and proud of their home.
The Cuisine
After so much walking and talking, I had worked up quite an appetite. A lady had told me about an Asian restaurant nearby that had attracted a loyal base of patrons, so I decided to give that a try. I was glad I did. I had Szechuan food, as I like things spicy. This was not only spicy, but also flavorful, so it was enjoyable all around. All of the vegetables they uses were extremely fresh and tasty, and their noodles were sublime.
