HotelTonight – Wausau Hotels
I had been traveling to different parts of Wisconsin for many years, mostly because of work. I had spent time in all of the bigger cities, including Green Bay, Milwaukee and Madison among others. However, there was one part of the state – the central part – where I had never really spent any time. It wasn't because of anything other than circumstances. Then one day recently, I wound up having a portion of my business schedule cancel while I was on a trip to Wisconsin. I was in Green Bay at the time, and I found out after these cancellations that Wausau was only a couple of hours away. Rather than sit in my hotel room and wait for my flight the next day, I decided to jump in my rental car and make the drive west to see the city of Wausau. I had never been there, but I was looking forward to seeing a part of the Dairy State that I had yet to see. I remembered on my drive that I had not booked a Wausau hotel room, but that wasn't a problem. I'd book one with HotelTonight as soon as I got to town.
The Mountain
Just to be clear, there are no actual mountains in Wisconsin. However, the closest thing to it in that part of the state is known as Rib Mountain. It rises nearly 2,000 feet above sea level. It's actually a hill, but it dominates the landscape, and I wanted to explore it as soon as I got to Wausau. I hiked to the top of it relatively quickly, and I spent a lot of time while up there taking photos of the panoramic views below. It was a pine tree-filled landscape that was nothing short of beautiful.
The Farmer's Market
After all of that walking, I was famished and thirsty. I made my way downtown only to realize that I had walked directly into a farmer's market. They have them on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the warm-weather months. I found a table that sold some of the freshest lemonade I had ever tasted, and I found a box of raspberries that were enormous and as bright a red as I had ever seen on this type of fruit. It wound up being the perfect refreshment, so I spent some time walking around and chatting with some of the very friendly locals.
The Cuisine
Even though it wasn't Friday, I really wanted to try the local fish fry, which is usually served to kick off the weekend. I found a place that served fried walleye, which is a local freshwater fish that the people in the area love. I was told to have a nice pilsner beer with my food, which I did. The walleye was thick, juicy and tasty, and the beer batter gave the entire entrée a nice texture and flavor. The tartar sauce and coleslaw completed the perfectly delicious meal.

After such a great meal, I was ready to get some sleep. Just then, I realized that I didn't have anywhere to stay. No problem – I opened my HotelTonight app and booked a Wausau hotel room in seconds. I couldn't wait to get some sleep, satisfied that I had seen another part of Wisconsin.
