You may have been to Seattle, but have you been to Anacortes? Located on the island of Fidalgo, just an easy drive away from Seattle, is the town of Anacortes, one of the most beautiful little island towns in the country. This seaside town is a popular weekend destination for Seattle locals because of its laidback vibes, gorgeous natural setting, and vibrant food and arts scene. After spending a week in Seattle for work, I decided that I wanted to see what Anacortes was all about. So I booked a last-minute hotel in Anacortes through my HotelTonight app, and just like that I had a hotel room waiting for me on Fidalgo Island. Shortly afterward, I hopped in my rental car and headed out on Hwy 20 to cross the bridge into Anacortes.
The Waterfront
When people picture Anacortes, they picture its historic waterfront. With its pretty harbor and impressive selection of great restaurants and shops, the waterfront is where you'll spend a lot of time during your stay in Anacortes. There's a certain charm to this seaside village that you won't find anywhere except the Pacific Northwest, and I fell in love with the spirit of the town immediately – especially since I was lucky enough to visit on a sunny summer day, where all the locals were out and about, enjoying the sunshine.
Outdoor Adventures
Anacortes may have a darling town, but it would be a shame to spend all of your time in the town when there's so much to do and see in the great outdoors near Anacortes. Fidalgo Island offers boundless opportunities for outdoor adventures, and I checked as many as I could off my list during my short stay. If you love water activities, you can go sailing, boating, kayaking or fishing. If you would rather stay on land, there's plenty of great hiking and biking trails that will take you along a scenic tour of the island.
Music
For being such a small seaside village, Anacortes has a surprisingly good music scene. Not only does the town have a handful of live music venues, but it also hosts regular music events. Seattle isn't the only hotspot for great music in the PNW. There's a strong artistic community in Anacortes, and you'll feel it when you walk the streets of the town. On any given night of the week, you're sure to find some great live music somewhere in Anacortes.

Even though I only spent one night in Anacortes, it only took me that long to fall in love with this quaint seaside town. Aside from the boundless natural beauty all around Anacortes, the town itself is a tight-knit community that is full of charm and energy, and I felt right at home the moment I arrived. The next time I find myself in Seattle for business, I'll definitely return to Anacortes.
