HotelTonight – Stowe Hotels Just for You
I drive around in the northeastern portion of the United States a lot for work. I love that part of the country, particularly Vermont. It may be small, but it's almost totally unique in terms of its culture, its landscape and its communities. I'm a traveling salesperson, so any free time I get is always appreciated when I'm on the road. However, that free time is rare given that I'm always hurrying off to another meeting somewhere soon. That all changed on one recent summer day. I was in the northern portion of Vermont when I got a call that my meetings throughout the rest of that day had been canceled. I decided to stop in Stowe, which wasn't far from me at the time. I knew it was a world-renowned ski lodge town, but I had never spent much time there and wanted to see what the community itself was all about. Given the time of year, I knew it wouldn't be overrun with skiers. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, either, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a Stowe hotel room as soon as I needed one.
The Hiking
The name "Vermont" can be traced to the name a French explorer gave it, which was "Verd Mont" or "Green Mountain." That's definitely the case in Stowe, as I was surrounded by beautiful mountains filled with trees. I wanted to see it up-close, so the first thing I did was put on some walking shoes and jump on one of the trails that was near town. I was glad I did, as the trail took me into the trees and around waterfalls and other gorgeous natural settings. I took a lot of photos, talked to a lot of nice people and got away from the bustle.
The Culture
Residents of Stowe seemed to really like how their economy was running with visitors, but there's also a local element here that I appreciated while I was there. I saw more than one art gallery and walked through one of them. I was quite impressed with the work from local artists. I wasn't surprised to see so many works dedicated to nature given the inspirational aspects of the landscape there, but I was impressed by the quality and the crowd. There were a lot of people there looking closely at the works on display.
The Dining
I always enjoy getting some pub food when I visit a place, so when I heard about a local pub that served local food and beer, I was all over it. The pub was basically a converted old house, with seating in the main room. I decided to try the pork tacos, and that turned out to be a good decision. The pork was lean and tasty and the tortillas were fresh, warm and not chewy. I ate them hungrily and washed them down with a local pilsner that provided the perfect flavor to bring the whole meal together.
