HotelTonight – Find Great Hotels in Abilene Texas
The city of Abilene is located in a region commonly referred to as "The Big Country" or the "Texas Midwest," and this former frontier settlement is now a vibrant city that prides itself on its small-town feel and its welcoming community. Abilene knows a thing or two about entertainment, and there is so much to do in this city, from enjoying the performing arts to watching a high school football game. So after spending the afternoon in Abilene last fall, I decided that I needed to extend my stay for at least another night. There was so much happening in this small Texas town, and I didn't want to miss out on one minute of the excitement. Without hesitating, I booked a great last-minute hotel in Abilene, Texas through HotelTonight. Just like that, I was ready to see why Abilene locals were so crazy about their hometown.
Downtown
Historic downtown Abilene is the beating heart of this Texas town. This is where you'll find the best shopping and dining in the city. Whether you're looking for great Texas barbecue or a locally beloved chocolate shop, you'll find it in downtown Abilene. Even though this is cowboy country, Abilene has so much more to offer than Western shops and good mesquite brisket (although those are great, too!). Downtown is home to charming antique shops, theaters and galleries, and trendy restaurants. Because of this charming downtown, Abilene quickly became one of my favorite towns in all of Texas.
Arts and Entertainment
Don't let its traditional Western vibe fool you – Abilene is so much more than just a football and barbecue town. Abilene actually has a great arts and entertainment scene, as it's home to many museums, theaters and art galleries. Notable arts establishments include The Grace Museum, The Paramount Theatre and the Center For Contemporary Arts. Also, Abilene hosts a monthly Artwalk, where all of the local museums are free, local artists and artisans set up booths, and local musicians perform in the streets of downtown.
Community Events
Even though Abilene is a rather small city, it hosts big community events, such as the annual Western Heritage Classic rodeo and the West Texas Fair and Rodeo. Also, Abilene is a huge football town, and every Friday night during football season, locals swarm the stands of Abilene High to watch their town's team. I was lucky enough to be in Abilene during football season, and now I can definitely confirm that no state loves football as much as Texas does.
