HotelTonight – Rhode Island Hotels in Seconds
When I get away, I don't mess around--I leave my laptop, my tablet and of course my calendar at home. The whole reason I take trips is to unshackle myself from the grind that is the daily schedule and routine. I get sick of having every minute accounted for before I even wake up, so when it's time for a vacation I try to maximize it. One of the things I like to do when I take a vacation is pick a place I've never been and just go see it. I don't plan out the days necessarily, but I do some research on that place to give me some ideas for where to go and what to see. For this trip, I picked Rhode Island. The only bit of planning I wanted to do was find a resource to help me find a Rhode Island hotel room should I encounter such a need at the last minute.
I pulled out my phone, as this was the only piece of technology I'd allow with me on my trip. I searched for apps that help people find hotel rooms instantly, and I found one called HotelTonight. I searched for Rhode Island hotels and was thrilled to see how many were available. I decided to book one, as I knew where I'd be on my first night, as I wanted to find out what I'd be in for if I used the app on the road. I was amazed, but within minutes, I had my Rhode Island hotel room all booked and confirmed. All I had to do now was a bit of research on Rhode Island to get some inspiration on where I should go and what I should see. This was going to be a great trip.
Rhode Island Is Small
While the people there don't necessarily like to hear about the size of their state, as it is the smallest in the country, I was struck by how small it actually was while I was there. I drove across it in seemingly no time, but part of that was because it was so beautiful I was not paying much attention to time. However, I talked to a local in Providence one day and he told me that Alaska, the largest state, is 400 times larger than Rhode Island and that Rhode Island is responsible for only one-four-thousandth of the land mass of the United States, or 0.025 percent.
Rhode Island – The Home of Jazz?
Jazz is a uniquely American genre of music, and it's best known for the live shows that are still played every night in New Orleans. Most people consider New Orleans to be the home and birthplace of jazz. While that may or may not be accurate, what did occur in Newport in 1954 was the first live jazz festival in the United States. You can still find a jazz club or two around the state, but this is something residents here tend to know about in large numbers.
Rhode Island Is the Ocean State
Rhode Island is known around the world as the Ocean State, and that's for good and obvious reasons. Given all of that water, though, and the fact that it can get rough on the Atlantic Ocean that far north, Rhode Island is also home to more shipwrecks than any other state. You can drive into just about any town and hear stories about ghost ships that tend to show up just off the shore at night, trying to get back at the town folk who did not help them while they were sinking.
Rhode Island Is the Land of Firsts
Rhode Island is a place that's known to constantly charge ahead. It was the first state, although it predates the United States, to outlaw slavery, doing so in 1652, or 124 years before the Declaration of Independence. Speaking of which, Rhode Island became the first colony to declare its independence from England, doing so in May of 1776, or two months before the Declaration was signed. These are also traditions and historical facts that make the people who live here extremely proud of their home state.

I was sad when it came time to head back to the airport for my flight home. I had seen and done a lot here, and I had also learned a lot about a beautiful and special place. Rhode Island is unlike any other state in the union, as it offers a bit of everything for everyone. I know I felt welcome and really enjoyed talking to the people who live here.
