I love cities that are known for something, particularly little cities. I've always made it a point when traveling for work, which is quite often, to make some time to visit as many of these unique communities as possible. In recent years, I've been traveling to Oregon, Northern California and Washington quite a bit for meetings. Unfortunately, I have not yet found much time to schedule time for myself. I was hoping to change all of that on my last trip to the Pacific Northwest, but it wasn't looking good. I wanted to visit a city called Newberg, as I had heard it was one of the bustling wine centers of Oregon. It didn't look like it was going to happen for me, though, until I got to Portland for my first day of meetings and found out that the next day's get-togethers had been canceled. I was thrilled to have found some time and immediately reserved a car to spend the day in Newberg. I wasn't even worried about finding a place to stay, as I travel with HotelTonight. The Downtown Tasting Rooms
I wasted no time in parking my car and getting out there to do some wine tasting. There were several tasting rooms right in the downtown area, and I went in and experienced a couple of them. Obviously, the wines that were being offered were from nearby vineyards, as Newberg is known by many as the unofficial gateway to Oregon wine country. I could not have enjoyed the flavors or the ambience in these classic tasting rooms more, and I bought quite a few bottles of wine that I planned to take home both for myself and to give as gifts.
The Vineyards
After seeing the finished product, I wanted to see what the vineyards that made the wine I had just smelled and tasted were all about. I got a ride to a vineyard just outside of town, and as was the case in the tasting rooms, the people there could not have been nicer. I got to see where the grapes were grown, how the wine was made and, finally, how it tasted. I had several questions given my love of the grape, and the people there answered every one of them patiently.
The Dining
Throughout the day, I had heard about how the chefs in the restaurants in Newberg incorporated the wine into their dishes. I had heard about one fine-dining establishment in particular more than once. I walked in and could tell it was a place for foodies. I ordered some sea bass that had been prepared in a local white wine, and I could not believe the flavor. I ate it quickly and enjoyed, of course, some fine local white wine with it. I even had dessert, which was ice cream infused with some local port.
