Oregon is a state that has a little bit of everything for those who live there and for those who visit. Do you want to spend a day on the beach? Sure – Oregon is home to Mount Hood and several other high-elevation attractions. I had been to Oregon many times and had experienced all of these wonderful things. What I had not yet seen in Oregon was a bucolic college town. Did the Beaver State have such a thing? Yes, yes it did. On my last trip there, I wound up with a spare 24 hours. I heard about this city known as Corvallis, and I decided to spend those 24 hours exploring it. I had heard that it was the quintessential college town, and I wanted to experience that for myself. As I drove there from Portland, I realized that I had yet to book a Corvallis hotel room. No problem – I'd just book one with my HotelTonight app as soon as I was ready for some sleep.
The University
The reason that Corvallis is known as a college town, of course, is because a large university is located there. Oregon State University calls Corvallis home, and I was quite surprised at its large size when I got there. More than 25,000 students are enrolled in the school, which means that it almost forms its own little city. It's the centerpiece of the town, which is home to fewer than 60,000 permanent residents. The campus itself is gorgeous, sitting in a valley surrounded by mountains off in the distance. I spent a few hours enjoying the scene.
The People
After touring the Oregon State University campus, I decided to check out the rest of the town for a little while. I stopped at a coffee shop to learn more about what it's like to live there. I found out that in the true sense of a college town, only about half of the residents of Corvallis own a home. I also found that the majority of the people I spoke to over those couple of hours were not originally from Corvallis nor were they permanent residents. What I did find is that everyone was extremely friendly.
The Dining
One thing you're almost sure to find in any college town is at least one very interesting place to eat. I heard about a place that served Hawaiian food, and that it was one of two in this little enclave that specialized in this cuisine. I walked in and it was not fancy. It almost looked a bit run-down, but that's because they focus on their food. I had the pork, and it was incredibly tasty and tender. I've been to Hawaii, and this place did things right.
