HotelTonight – Coos Bay, Oregon Hotels Nearby
The Oregon coastline is a wonder to behold for anyone who has not seen it. I'm lucky in that my job takes me out on the road a lot, and quite a bit of that traveling is through the Pacific Northwest. If I have enough time, I drive along the coast whenever possible. The extra time necessary to arrive at my destination is more than worth it, and being there seems to reset my soul. The only problem with taking the time to see this part of the world is that because of my schedule, I never have time to stop and really explore this coastline and the communities that sit alongside the sea. On my last trip, an opportunity did arise to spend 24 hours as I saw fit. I had no interest in just driving to my destination a day ahead of time. Instead, I decided to stop in a place called Coos Bay to see what life was like there. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay that night, as I travel with HotelTonight. My trusty app would find me a Coos Bay hotel room as soon as I needed one.
The Town
I envisioned a classic seaside town before I pulled into Coos Bay, and that's exactly what I found when I got there. The city itself, as I found out while talking to someone at a coffee shop, is the biggest on the Oregon coast. Its population is just over 16,000 people. The downtown area is incredibly quaint, as the little shops that line the main drags are seemingly all locally owned, pristinely clean and unbelievably welcoming. I walked around downtown after my coffee and said hello to some folks. Every time I did, I got a heartfelt response.
The Fishing
I was in Coos Bay in the late summer, and as I found out as I drove and walked around the bay and its estuaries, that was chinook salmon season. They were running while I was there, and that was quite a treat for me in more ways than one. These enormous silver creatures were filling people's boats who were landing and filling others' baskets and buckets as they worked the shallower bodies of water near the shore. I had never seen anything quite like this, and I only wished I had the time to spend a few days pulling some of them in for myself.
The Dining
After seeing what I saw, I had to get myself some fresh salmon for dinner. A lady told me about a local place that served great seafood, so I went there. The place looked like a classic tackle shop, and yes, they had fresh local salmon. I ordered some that was prepared with lemon and dill seasoning, and I couldn't believe the flavor. Its consistency was almost like the most tender steak you've ever eaten, and the flavor just popped in my mouth.
