There are certain parts of the world where I can simply get lost for hours or even days and not realize it until something shakes me out of my trance and sends me back into reality, whether I want to return there or not. The Oregon coast is one of those places. I spend a lot of time traveling in that part of the country for work, and whenever I have to drive from Portland to northern portions of California, I always drive along the coast as much as possible. Yes, it takes longer to get to my destination, but it's more than worth the time. As much as I love looking at the stunning coast and the unique rock formations that form the identity of this area, I've never really had a chance to explore it deeply. That all changed recently when, while on my way to meetings, I found out that cancellations left me with an entire day to myself. I was near a city called Bandon, so I decided to stop there. The Strange Familiarity
I not only travel a lot for work, but I like to travel as much as I can in my free time as well. In recent years, I've been spending a lot of time in Europe. It took me a bit of time to put this together, but as I drove around the coast near the city during the morning, I realized that the rock formations, the tall grass and the sand that falls into the sea reminded me a lot of the coast of the United Kingdom. The weather is largely similar as well, and it was all so beautiful.
The Town
As gorgeous as the coastline was, the town itself was equally as charming. Only about 3,000 people live in Bandon, and as soon as you stroll through downtown you see and feel the fact that you're in a truly classic seaside town. The little businesses are about as quaint as can be, and the locals that live here take a lot of pride in keeping their home clean. They all seem to know each other as well, and as I made my way down the main drag, nearly everyone gave me a genuine greeting.
The Dining
There were quite a few choices for dinner in this little community, but naturally I wanted to enjoy some seafood and a view if possible. I stopped at a place that overlooked the water and that served lots of different things. I ordered the fish and chips and enjoyed the galley-like atmosphere. The food was outstanding and the local beers were quite tasty. The staff and patrons were, as people had been all day, incredibly friendly as well. I enjoyed a beer after dinner and paid my bill.
