HotelTonight – Historic District Helena Hotels in Minutes

Helena, Montana is a charming town that grew out of a small gold miner's camp. After gold drew miners to the town in the 1860s, Helena began to flourish, and today it's the capital of Montana. The rich history and culture of Helena is apparent all over the town, but nowhere more so than the Historic District. This lovely, well-preserved historic district attracted me immediately, which is why I chose to book a hotel in the Helena Historic District during my recent trip to Montana. Whenever I travel, I love staying in areas that locals love just as much as visitors, and the Historic District is one of these neighborhoods. So I pulled up HotelTonight on my phone, and within minutes I had booked a great hotel room in the heart of the Historic District of Helena.

Last Chance Gulch

Back in the day, this historic district was a mining camp called "Last Chance Gulch." After a few miners found gold in 1864, other miners flooded in, all hoping to strike it rich in Last Chance Gulch. The history of this town is what has made it into such a darling, culturally rich town in the Rockies, and there's no shortage of charm or character anywhere in Helena.

Reeder's Alley

This intact old town street is so well preserved you'll think you've taken a step back in time. This is where the mining settlement began, and you can still see hints of the gold mining community and the Chinese community here. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and you can take guided tours if you're interested in the history of the district. If you find yourself in Helena, this is one thing you cannot miss seeing before you go.

Mansion District

If you love beautiful old mansions, then you're going to love the Helena Historic District. There are over a dozen historic mansions in a neighborhood dubbed the "Mansion District," and it reveals the extreme wealth Helena once had. At one point in its history, Helena was home to more millionaires per capita than any other city in the country. Today, you can stroll past these well-preserved mansions on streets like Benton, Adams and Clarke. Just don't go knocking on the doors asking for tours – people do actually live in these stunning old homes.

I only spent a weekend in Helena, but I can assuredly say that the Historic District is my favorite neighborhood in the city. It's full of history, culture and charm, and I can see why the locals are so fond of it. I'm especially glad that I chose to stay at a hotel in the Historic District of Helena, because it was centrally located to every place I wanted to visit.
