Denver is an incredible city for a lot of different reasons. It's one of the keystones of the American West and has been for centuries. I've always enjoyed my time in Denver, but I never really got an opportunity to see much outside of what I could manage to quickly experience while working. I decided to change all of that not too long ago. Before my last business trip there, I decided to extend my trip by 24 hours. That would give me an entire day to see some things that I had not yet seen. I chose to spend those 24 hours in the foothills surrounding Denver, and the community I chose to explore was Evergreen. I had heard a lot about it but had never seen it. I couldn't wait to get out and just dive into a place to learn what life was like there. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, either. The Open Space
When I booked my return flight for one extra day out, I wanted to see and experience some fresh and open mountain air. That's exactly what you get in Evergreen. This is the quintessential mountain town about 25 minutes away from downtown Denver. It seems like you're in another world. The scenery is hard to believe even as you're looking at it, and the hiking trails are seemingly everywhere. I walked around for a while and listened to the wind blow through the huge pine trees. There's nothing like it, as it brings you right back to your proverbial center.
The Wine
I have to admit that I love wine. I have always enjoyed tasting wines from different parts of the world, but also have to admit that I never thought I'd find wine I loved in Evergreen, Colorado. As it turns out, there is a very well-known and highly-respected winery there. I had to go in and try it out, even if I wasn't ready to taste wine that day. I'm glad I did, as the wine was really unlike anything I had ever sampled. I bought a couple of bottles to bring home with me.
The Food
You can't spend a day in a mountain town unless you're ready to enjoy a nice mountain feast at the end of the day. I certainly followed that idea fully. I found a place that served some of the best steak I had ever tasted. It was tender, juicy, flavorful and the texture was so soft I couldn't believe I was eating beef. I thoroughly enjoyed the local beer that they suggested I have with it as well, and the whole thing was marvelous.
