San Jose, California is a place where there is something for everyone. Yes, it's a booming tech town and what many people consider the center of Silicon Valley. Yes, it's a vibrant metropolis that's filled with professionals who are working to make their way in the world. It's also a place where there are different pockets of communities that offer people something a bit different from the hustle and bustle of the professional world. I had always wanted to see that part of San Jose but was never able to until recently. It all changed when I decided to book my return flight from San Jose for a work trip for 24 hours after my work obligations were complete. I wanted to see this neighborhood called the Fairgrounds, as I had heard quite a bit about it. I was looking forward to seeing what it's really like to spend time in this part of the world. The Affordability
I tend to look at what the homes are valued at in general within a neighborhood to help myself get a feel for what a community is like. San Jose overall is notorious for its extremely expensive housing, but that's not the case in Fairgrounds. You can find relatively affordable homes, condos and town-homes here in several different areas. That doesn't mean that Fairgrounds is not aesthetically pleasing, either, as it seems to be a nice place filled with a lot of nice families who go about their business on a daily basis.
The Shopping
I could not believe all of the retail outlets that were present in Fairgrounds. Pretty much everything you could imagine was here. I wonder about areas that seem to be magnets for these types of businesses, but what I found here is that the people who were shopping there appear to appreciate the convenience of having everything you could possibly need nearby. I know this because I stopped at a cafe next to a few of these stores and had a very nice conversation with a local lady. Anything that helps you avoid the traffic-heavy freeways is a good thing.
The Restaurants
There are a lot of different types of restaurants present here in Fairgrounds. The lady I spoke to suggested that for dinner I should try an El Salvadorian place that's been a staple for years. I wasn't even sure what El Salvadorian food was, but the pupusas were so good that I have been looking for a place that serves them near where I live since I got back from my trip. These stuffed tortillas were really something.
