Northern California is a unique part of the world for several different reasons, but mostly because you can start just about anywhere, travel 50 miles in any direction and be somewhere totally different when you arrive. I've been all over this part of the Golden State for work over the years, and while I've always enjoyed my travel there, I've never really gotten the opportunity to stop and explore some of the communities that I drive through and past with regularity. Any traveling professional shares that struggle, as there isn't enough time to stop and see what's happening in different parts of the world. There is always that next meeting to get to as quickly as possible. That all changed for me on my last trip to California. I was driving from one city to another when I got a call that the meetings for that day were canceled. That was my chance to pick a city and get to know it for a day. I chose Davis. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I always traveled with HotelTonight. I'd book a Davis, California hotel room when I was ready to get some sleep.
The Bicycles
As I pulled into Davis, a city of fewer than 70,000 people, I felt a bit out of place. It took me a minute, but I soon realized it was because I was traveling in a car. Everywhere I looked, I saw people riding bicycles. It was as if I was in Amsterdam or some other European city. I stopped for coffee and found out that about half of the city uses bicycles to commute to work and school. I was also told that the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame was there, so traveling on two wheels is a part of the culture.
The Campus
Davis is a true college town. The University of California, Davis is one of the most respected academic institutions in the world, and I was excited to see the campus. It's a much larger school than I expected, as enrollment is currently at around 35,000 students. The campus itself is a mix of nature and modernity, and as I walked around and talked with students it didn't take long for me to realize that they were coming there from all over the world. It was a vibrant and beautiful place.
The Dining
Given the diversity of the population in Davis, it wasn't a surprise to find a lot of different options for dinner. I had heard about an Irish place more than once during the day, so I went there. It looked like an Irish pub with dark wood and accents everywhere. Of course, I had an Irish stout and I ordered the mussels. They were cooked in a white wine sauce and were scrumptious. They also perfectly complemented the beer and the nice salad that came with it.
