Seattle is one of the most interesting cities in the world, and I can say that from the perspective of someone who has traveled across just about every continent. It seems that there is a piece of every continent here in the Emerald City, which is one of the reasons that I always enjoy traveling there. I'm also lucky enough to have a job that takes me to Seattle regularly. What I've been doing recently is pushing my return flight from Seattle out by a day so that after I finish my work obligations, I can take some time to see what's happening in a new part of town. I don't just drive around and look at obvious things either; I pick a neighborhood on each trip and spend all of my time there. It allows me the opportunity to really get to know a place well. It also removes the time pressure that can arise when you want to see a lot of a big city. On my most recent trip, I chose to visit Wallingford. The Mixture
There are some neighborhoods where it's clear that most of the people who live there have done so for most of their lives, and where most of the businesses there have been there for generations. There are others where it's nothing but new and trendy and ever-changing. Wallingford is interesting because there is a lot of both of those influences in the community. There are iconic restaurants and bars as well as shops, but there are a lot of new places opening as well. It tends to attract a diverse crowd.
The Park
Gasworks Park may seem at first like a lot of other parks, but it's anything but normal or common. You realize that as soon as you spend even a small amount of time there. You can take a tour of the old gasworks plant that was basically what spawned the neighborhood and you can see just about everything there is to see from the vantage point that sits on top of a big hill. I walked around and took it all in, enjoying the fresh air and, yes, the sunshine of Seattle.
The Food
I love restaurants that have been in business for a long time. That tells me that, obviously, they serve good food. If they did not, they wouldn't remain in business for that long. I wanted to have a nice steak for dinner, and a nice lady told me about a place that served a really good one. She was right. I savored every bite of that juicy, flavorful cut of meat along with the perfect red wine to match. It was a delicious meal.
