When you visit Seattle, you feel a vibe that permeates throughout the city such that you know you're somewhere special. The people carry themselves a certain way. The landscape seems to fit perfectly with what's been built around it. It all feels right. I have been exploring Seattle for some time now. I'm there often for work. What I do is extend my trip by 24 hours from the point where my work is finished every time I'm there. Then I choose one neighborhood to explore for those 24 hours. It gives me the time I need to really dig into an area. It removes any time pressure to the point where you may miss something you appreciated seeing. On my last trip, I chose to visit Fremont. I had heard a lot about it but never really spent any time there. I wanted to learn what it was like to live there as a local as much as possible. The Business Community
Fremont is located just outside of downtown, and as everyone understands Seattle is a business center for the entire world. When walking around Fremont, I noticed Seattle offices for companies you may have heard of that include Google, Getty Images, Adobe and others. As you would imagine, that also means that there are a lot of young professionals running around here throughout the day. It's a busy, bustling place that still seems to maintain its low-key vibe.
The Events
As I mentioned, this is a vibrant, bustling neighborhood. I took a look at a community calendar when I stopped at a cafe for a coffee and could not believe how packed it was with things to do. There are art fairs, flea markets, farmer's markets, open-air festivals and the like seemingly all year long. On the day I was there, artists were out on the streets painting and selling their wares to passers-by, and as interesting as it was to me, no one who seemed to be a local thought anything of it. They simply walked along and enjoyed themselves as they would on any other day and in any other place.
The Restaurants
Young professionals tend to like variety, and you see that reflected in the numerous restaurant choices that are present here in Fremont. I saw Korean fusion food, cafes, gastro pubs and the like. I was in Seattle, however, so I wanted seafood. I found a place that specializes in it and I ordered the almond-crusted salmon, as it was in-season then. It was fabulous. The salmon melted in my mouth and the almonds provided the crunch needed to complete the texture and flavor.
