HotelTonight – BMount Vernon Washington Hotel Tonight
Located in between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, is the jewel of Skagit County, Mount Vernon. This city truly is a little slice of Pacific Northwest heaven, because there's no shortage of natural wonders just a short drive away. On a recent road trip from Washington to Canada, I found myself in Mount Vernon unexpectedly. Before stopping here, I knew relatively little about Mount Vernon, but after just an hour wandering through the streets of the charming downtown, I knew I wanted to spend more time here. So instead of hopping back in my car and making my way north, I decided to spend the night in Mount Vernon. To book a last-minute hotel in Mount Vernon, I simply pulled up the HotelTonight app on my phone. Within minutes, I had booked a great hotel in the heart of the city, and I was ready to start exploring Skagit County for myself.
Downtown
Downtown Mount Vernon has a rich, storied history, which you can still see in various buildings in this historic downtown. With roots tracing back to the 1870s, it's no wonder why the historic streets of downtown are so treasured by locals. While full of historic buildings, downtown Mount Vernon is also full of energy and trendy new shops and restaurants. It's also home to the annual Tulip Festival Street Fair, which draws visitors from all over Washington and even Canada.
The Salish Sea
Mount Vernon is located near the Salish Sea, a network of coastal waterways that stretch from British Columbia to the northwestern corner of Washington. The Salish Sea is large and is comprised of many different bodies of water, such as the Desolation Sound and the Hammersley Inlet. Because of its sheer size, there are so many things to do in the Salish Sea, from boating and fishing to kayaking and swimming. Or, if you just want to see the beauty of the Salish Sea in person, you can go on a nearby hike that features breathtaking views of the sea.
The National Park
If you want to see the true beauty of Skagit County, you'll want to visit the Upper Skagit's North Cascades National Park. Some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the country can be found in the Cascades, which feature striking mountains, pristine lakes and miles and miles of evergreen forest. Since I visited Mount Vernon in the summer, I was able to go hiking and canoeing in the Cascades. But if you visit during the winter, you can enjoy a number of winter sports, including skiing.
