HotelTonight – Book Your Hotel in San Marcos Texas Tonight
San Marcos is a lovely town in Central Texas that sits right in between Austin and San Antonio, making it easily accessible for a quick weekend getaway. San Marcos is actually believed to be one of the oldest continually lived-in regions in the Americas, so there's a really rich, distinguished history and heritage in San Marcos that you won't find in many other places around the country. San Marcos locals also love living in this small Texas town because it's such a fantastic place to raise a family and to be a part of a warm, tight-knit community. San Marcos is regularly ranked as one of the best small cities in the US. So when I recently had the chance to visit San Marcos, I jumped at it. Without hesitating, I booked a great hotel in San Marcos through my HotelTonight app, and just like that I was ready to start exploring one of Central Texas' most beloved towns.
Downtown
Historic downtown San Marcos is always bustling with locals, as this district is really the heart and soul of the town. Locals head downtown whenever they want to enjoy some great shopping and even better dining, so naturally I also spent a lot of time downtown during my San Marcos getaway. The idyllic streets of downtown San Marcos are filled with trendy boutiques and one-of-a-kind retailers, as well as lively shopping plazas and the hip downtown square.
The River
One of the most defining aspects of San Marcos is the San Marcos River. This pretty river is the source of many local recreational activities, such as hiking and biking along riverfront trails and tubing and kayaking on the river. The San Marcos River is actually known for being a great spot for tubing, so I decided to cool off on that warm summer day by joining the locals in the river. I rented a tube and jumped right in.
The University
San Marcos is home to a major university, Texas State University. Today, there are just under 40,000 students attending TSU, and this large, energetic student population has really defined the culture and atmosphere of San Marcos. I wanted to visit the campus while in San Marcos, and loved exploring areas like the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, the football stadium and the University Art Gallery. Visiting the Texas State University campus gave me a great feel for the culture and character of this town.
