Longview, Texas is a relatively small city, but the energy and atmosphere in this town is anything but small. Business is booming and locals are always excited about something that's happening in town, so it's no wonder why it's regularly ranked as one of the best small cities to live in Texas. I spent a few days in Longview during a recent trip to Texas, and I have to admit that I now have quite a soft spot in my heart for this small town in East Texas. There's something about the warm southern hospitality and tight-knit community feel in Longview that I loved, and clearly locals love it too. Longview residents will be more than happy to explain why they love their town so much, and they'll also probably give you some great tips on what to see and do and where to eat while in their town. Downtown
In my opinion, every small town should have a great downtown area, like Longview does, because it helps bring the community together and provides a central area for shopping, eating and socializing. The streets of downtown Longview are filled with beautiful old buildings and terrific shopping and dining options. Downtown is also where many community events are held, such as fairs and markets, so it truly is the heartbeat of Longview.
Universities
Believe it or not, but the small town of Longview is actually a college town. Much of Longview's vibrant energy comes from the youth and excitement of the student population, which is why I decided to visit some of the local universities while in Longview. This town is home to LeTourneau University, as well as campuses of Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Tyler. Because of these three institutes of higher learning, there is a large student population in Longview, and it just adds to the energy of the town.
Outdoor Recreation
Longview is ideally located for anyone who loves to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Not only are there several beautiful golf courses in the area, but there are also great hiking and mountain biking trails at parks like Cargill Long, Grace Creek Mountain and Lake O' The Pines. I definitely think Longview locals are lucky, because not many people have such convenient access to beautiful outdoor spaces like they do in Longview.
