HotelTonight – Greenville, SC Hotels
I spend a lot of time driving in the southeastern portion of the United States. I'm a traveling salesperson, so my routes take me to and from such places as Charlotte, Atlanta and other large markets. The drives between these cities are always lovely for me, as they provide me with an opportunity to sit and think about my job, my life and whatever else is on my mind that day without interruption. However, on my last drive between Charlotte and Atlanta, I was interrupted by a phone call from my home office telling me that all of my meetings that day had been canceled due to an illness. I realized that I could do something unique – I could stop off near where I was and explore a new place. I happened to be driving past a community known as Greenville, South Carolina. It sounded interesting to me, so I decided to take 24 hours to explore it. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay at the last minute, as I travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd just book a Greenville, SC hotel room when I was ready to get some sleep.
The Beauty
I've seen a lot of smaller cities in my lifetime, but few if any could ever match up to the beauty of Greenville. This is a city of fewer than 70,000 residents, but it's obviously thriving and comfortable with itself. It's set against a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which makes the town seem almost nestled in place. There's a beautiful downtown area with a floating bridge, quaint buildings and little businesses all around, and people who obviously love where they call home. I walked around a bit and talked to some people, and that legendary southern hospitality is definitely a prominent thing there.
The Arts
As I walked around, it also became obvious that Greenville is home to a vibrant arts scene. There were several museums within close proximity, and I walked through a couple of them to see what type of local history was on display. I also strolled through a couple of art galleries and was surprised to see so many locals doing the same thing in the middle of the week. Once again, perhaps the best part of the experience was talking to people who lived there, and they told me this art-focused culture is the way it's been for generations in Greenville.
The Dining
I had to have something authentic and local for dinner, so I chose a barbecue place that I had heard about more than once during the day. It's in an old red house, but the decor was actually quite nice. However, it's nothing compared to the incredible food. I had pulled pork and brisket, and the only regret was that my appetite wasn't bigger, or I would've eaten more. The met was smoky, flavorful and so tender I hardly had to chew it. What a great dinner.
