HotelTonight – Beaufort, SC Hotels in Seconds
Every now and then, I find myself getting an opportunity to see something unique. I love to travel and have been using every second of free time I can manufacture to do just that for as long as I can remember. Perhaps it's because I stumble upon these opportunities to go somewhere I've never heard of before, and most of the time when it happens, I wind up seeing and experiencing something wonderful. It happened to me again recently. I got a call from a lady I know who told me that a member of their travel group had canceled her reservation for a trip at the last minute. They managed to cancel her hotel room but not her flight. She asked if I could come along, but I'd have to leave later that day. They were going to a place called Beaufort, South Carolina and they'd be there for one day. Without even thinking, I jumped at the chance and quickly packed a small backpack before heading to the airport. I wasn't worried that I didn't have a Beaufort, SC hotel room. The Scene
I didn't even realize it until we were in the air, but Beaufort is not on the mainland of South Carolina, and no, I didn't know South Carolina had a mainland, either. It's a small city of around 13,000 people located on Port Royal Island off the coast. The downtown area of Beaufort is like something out of a beautiful time warp, filled with antebellum mansions in what is actually its Historic District. I walked around, amazed at what I was seeing and spoke to a few of the locals. That legend of southern hospitality was alive and well, as the people could not have been nicer.
The Park
I wanted to see what was outside while in Beaufort, and I heard about a park that sat along the Beaufort River. I headed over there and spent hours taking in the scenery. The park overlooked a bridge that only added to what I was seeing. There was an old cannon pointed across the water. There were palmetto trees all around, and it was cool in the shade with a nice breeze. I walked around and took a lot of different photos, talking to more nice people who lived in the area.
The Dining
After all that walking around, I was quite hungry. I had heard about a casual place that was hit with the locals, so that's where I decided to go. There was a lively vibe there, and the red tables with white linens really presented a visual contrast. I had the fried chicken, which was served over mashed potatoes with some green beans. It was as elegant as it was delicious, as the chicken was crunchy and juicy, and the potatoes were perfectly creamy.
