Fishtown locals really, really love their neighborhood. They consider it to be the best neighborhood in all of Philadelphia, and I wanted to see what all the hype was about during my recent trip to Philly. Traditionally, Fishtown is a working class neighborhood, once a hub for the commercial fishing industry due to its setting along the harbor. Today, Fishtown is one of Philly's trendier 'hoods, as it has recently attracted young professionals and artistic types, while still maintaining some of its working class vibes. In just a few short minutes, I had a lovely hotel room waiting for me on the hippest street in Fishtown, and I was ready to explore this locally beloved neighborhood for myself.
A Small Town Vibe
Compared to most of central Philadelphia, Fishtown feels a bit off the grid. It's removed from the hustle and bustle of Center City, and just by walking its streets you can tell it has a strong sense of community. Some of the locals in Fishtown have been here for generations, so this neighborhood – although very urban in many aspects--can feel like a small town. That being said, Fishtown certainly isn't a remote, inconvenient place to stay or live, because you can get to Center City in just ten minutes on the El. Or you can even bike downtown, if you feel like breaking a sweat that day.
Green Spaces
One of the reasons why Fishtown feels like such a tight-knit community is its abundance of public spaces. As I explored Fishtown on foot (which is easy to do--Fishtown is a very walkable area), I couldn't help but notice all of the great public parks and open spaces. This waterfront neighborhood offers plenty of places to exercise, play with your kids, or simply enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. After talking to a few Fishtown locals, I learned that some of the most popular parks in the area include Palmer Park, Penn Treaty Park and Konrad Square.
The Art Scene
Fishtown is no longer a strictly working class, commercial fishing district. Today, it's much trendier and more artistic, and you can see artwork all around you when you stroll around Fishtown, which now prides itself on its flourishing art scene. If you want to see some great local as well as international artwork, wander down Frankford Avenue, which is dotted with eclectic art galleries on both sides of the street.

I only had a couple of days to really explore Fishtown, but I was able to get a great feel for the neighborhood's culture and energy in just a few hours. After my time in Fishtown, I definitely have to agree with its residents--this is one of the coolest, most authentic neighborhoods in Philadelphia. If I return to Philly in the near future, I already know I'll be staying in Fishtown.
