HotelTonight – University District Columbus Hotels
There are college towns and then there are cities that are home to enormous universities. While there may be some debate as to which category Columbus, Ohio belongs in, it's always a positive debate. That's because both the city and the campus of The Ohio State University are beautiful places where everyone feels welcome, except for maybe fans of visiting football teams for a few hours on Saturdays in the fall. Regardless of how it's classified, I have always been impressed with the reputation and the alumni of the university that I have met. It made me want to explore the campus and the surrounding neighborhood closely, but I never really had that opportunity for obvious reasons including being quite busy. That changed recently when a connecting flight in Columbus was canceled, and I was going to be there for 24 hours. I decided not to just stay by the airport and instead spend that time visiting the University District. The Stadiums
The first place I wanted to visit when I got to the University District was the famed football stadium. "The Shoe" as it's called by the locals has been host to some of the greatest football teams and some of the most historic college football games ever played. You can tour the place if you want to, but I just wanted to get a look at it. It's a marvel of engineering, and seeing it helped me understand how it was possible to fit so many people into one place safely and comfortably. It was awesome.
The Rest of Campus
I also, of course, wanted to visit the academic campus. I had heard that it was large, but I didn't realize how large until I got there. There were different sections of campus in different places, and I was sure that if I was a student at OSU I'd be in great shape just from walking around between classes. The campus itself was all at once bucolic, modern, buzzing with activity and full of an energy that is hard to describe to this day. I guess that's what happens when tens of thousands of young people are all busy preparing for the world.
The Food
When you're on a college campus, you're going to encounter some interesting--and most likely affordable--food options. I was told about a creamery that served incredible hamburgers and ice cream, which seemed like the perfect college food. I decided to give it a try and was glad that I did. The hamburgers were enormous, and the ice cream was so decadent that I almost wondered if I was going to wind up in trouble for eating it. It was a unique meal and one that I could understand why it was so popular on campus.
