Recently I found myself in Elko for a business meeting; however, shortly after I arrived in town I got a phone call informing me that the meeting had been canceled. Instead of just heading back home I decided to make the most of my time in Elko and spend the day exploring the city. I hadn't planned to spend the night in Elko originally but knew finding a place to stay wouldn't be a problem thanks to the easy to use HotelTonight app.
The Area
Located in northeast Nevada, Elko lies near the banks of the Humboldt River and is a wonderful little town with a lot of historic things to see. Elko was part of the historic California Trail and was also part of the Central Pacific Railroad, which is part of the First Transcontinental Railroad. As I entered Elko, I was amazed at how many things there was to see and do in the town. I couldn't wait to spend a day exploring Elko and relaxing after a long drive.
Things to Do
I love experiencing the history of any area I visit and was especially looking forward to my day in Elko. There are a number of awesome museums and historical sights in Elko that I wanted to visit. The first place I decided to check out was the California Trail Historic Interpretive Center. It was one of the coolest museums I've ever visited. There were so many awesome things to see there. After that, I decided to visit an old railroad station. It was another really great experience and felt like I was stepping back in time. I also checked out some local stores and casinos in the area. There was so much to do in Elko, I could have spent a week there.
The Food
I was feeling hungry after my day in Elko and wanted to get something for dinner. I asked some locals where the best place to eat was and ended up heading to a restaurant that specializes in food from the Basque country of Spain and France. Everything on the menu looked delicious and the staff was friendly and helpful. I decided to order salmon and a potato, and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. I'll be sure to come back during my next trip to Elko.
