HotelTonight – Bemidji Hotels Are Available
Driving through rural parts of the United States is something that I've always found relaxing. There's a serenity to places like this that can't be duplicated in major metropolitan areas. The people in these communities are generally genuine, wholesome and welcoming. I've been traveling for work for many years now, and I've always looked forward to the opportunity to spend some time in one of these smaller places that many people drive right past on the highway without giving them a second thought. This happened to me again recently, when I was driving through the northwestern portion of Minnesota. I found out suddenly that my entire schedule the following day was wiped out, so I had 24 hours on my hands to do with as I pleased. The first sign for a city I saw after I got that call was for Bemidji, a place I had heard of but never had the chance to see. That settled it – I was going to get to know this place. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay. I travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a Bemidji hotel room as soon as I was ready.
The Sculptures
I pulled into Bemidji and immediately realized that this was a classic, small Midwest community with a main drag and old, lovely buildings all over the place. What I didn't expect was that there were also sculptures all over the place. They even call this the Sculpture Walk. All over town, scattered in different places, were sculptures that were quite large and quite beautiful. I don't know how all of this got started, but it adds a layer of beauty to this town that is hard to explain. I spent a couple of hours walking and taking photos.
The Park
I love the outdoors, so when I heard that there were nice hiking paths at Lake Bemidji State Park, I made my way over there immediately. The park is situated along the lake, and the scenery was breathtaking. Everything was incredibly green, there were wild berries right off the path that people were eating, and the wildlife was quite visible on the land, in the air and in the water. I sat and watched a couple of older men happily fish off of a dock on the lake and thought about how wonderful it would be to have such a place near home.
The Dining
For a city with fewer than 15,000 residents, there were a surprising number of restaurants in town. I heard about a local tavern that served great burgers, and that's exactly what I wanted. I walked in, and it was not a bar with any kind of shtick – it was just a down-home, friendly place. The burgers, as it turned out, were fantastic. They were huge, cooked perfectly and seasoned properly, and the cheese fell off the side of the patty. The fries were also quite crispy and tasty, and the local beer I had made the whole meal come together.
