Castleberry Hill is a historic Atlanta neighborhood located just southwest of downtown, and it's primarily known for being home to Atlanta's creative types. This artistic community boasts some of the best art galleries, public artwork and creative flair in the entire city, so there's a distinct vibe in Castleberry Hill that you won't find elsewhere in Atlanta. If you have an affinity for the arts and want to explore one of Atlanta's most creative scenes, you should definitely visit Castleberry Hill. Since I hadn't thoroughly explored Castleberry Hill during all of my trips to Atlanta, I recently decided to stay in the neighborhood in order to get a good sense of the community. The Art Scene
This historic warehouse district is filled with art galleries, lofts for its creative residents, and trendy restaurants and bars. While you can walk through Castleberry Hill and get an immediate sense of the neighborhood's artistic heart, the best way to experience Castleberry Hill's art scene is during its monthly Art Stroll. I was lucky enough to be in Castleberry Hill during the Friday night Art Stroll, so I got a great feel for the neighborhood's unique artistic vibe and its strong sense of community.
Hollywood in Atlanta
Since Castleberry Hill is comprised of lofts, warehouses and historic buildings, it has become a very popular place to film TV shows and movies. More than 40 movies and shows have been filmed in Castleberry Hill and its surrounding areas, so you just might recognize the neighborhood from the screen. If you're interested in the makings of movies and TV shows (like I am), you'll find Castleberry Hill fascinating. There are tour groups that will take you past some of the famous movie spots in Castleberry Hill, but I preferred to wander the streets alone and simply imagine the movie magic that has happened in this creative neighborhood.
Historic Architecture
Much of Castleberry Hill was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, so it's filled with beautiful old buildings and historic architecture. A simple stroll through the neighborhood will take you past exceptionally maintained old buildings and historically significant sights, so it's a great neighborhood to explore if you're an architecture lover. When you wander through Castleberry Hill, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for authentic old signage that dates back over a hundred years.
