HotelTonight – Woodstock, VT Hotels Near You
One of the things I've always found most alluring about Vermont is that there is no central, enormous city that dominates every other aspect of it. While I enjoy large cities, I've always been one who's felt just a bit more comfortable in smaller communities. The pace of life is a bit slower, the people are a bit friendlier in general, and there are still plenty of things to see and do. I was thinking about this comfort, as I was driving through Vermont one day not too long ago. I wasn't planning on stopping anywhere, because I had a long drive ahead of me that day, but I wished I could have found the time. Then, suddenly, it all changed. I got a call from my home office that there was bad weather ahead of me and that I should just stop for the day. I was quite okay with that, and I was near a place called Woodstock. I figured I'd stop there and spend the next 24 hours exploring. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I always travel with HotelTonight. I'd book a Woodstock, VT hotel room when it was time.
The History
When you pull into Woodstock, it feels like you're driving into the past. The history of the place just jumps out at you. Even though Woodstock is a small community, as only about 3,000 people live there, it's been around for hundreds of years. It was originally chartered in 1761, making it older than the United States. As I walked around the middle of town, I saw homes and other buildings that had to have been at least a couple of hundred years old. Everything was incredibly tasteful and impeccably maintained. There was a lot of civic pride here.
The Farm Museum
The buildings weren't the only historical aspects of Woodstock that had been preserved, as I found out when I stumbled across a farm that was also a museum. It was a dairy farm, which Vermont is known for, but there were also a lot of exhibits around that recreated the way farming was done in the 19th century. I was fascinated with how much work was required to maintain a dairy farm back then, and it was a good reminder as to how far we have come over the course of the past several generations.
The Dining
There were some nice choices for dinner that evening, but I wanted to go to a place a lady had told me about that was part of an old inn. The ambience was quite rustic and lovely, but the food was extremely modern and creative. I had a tenderloin that was so tasty I could hardly believe it, as it likely came from a farm just up the road. I enjoyed a beautiful green salad with it, and a very nice glass of red wine. It was a splendorous meal in a historic setting.
